HOW DOES FASHION AFFECT YOUR RIGHT TO THE CITY DEPENDING ON THE URBAN FABRIC ?

Urban Textile

This podcast looks at the relation between fashion and the city. Some key ideas were inspired by Henri Lebfevre & George Zimmel.

I chose to write about the the impact of clothing on our right to the city for multiple reason. In my studio project I am focusing on youth culture. One of the elements I am trying to disrupt is the stigma around young people and appearance happened to be one of the factors that society finds intimidating about teenagers. Secondly, we study at CSM which is an iconic place for fashion innovation and creativity. Finally, I am drawn to the right to the city and our roles as performers/ citizens within it. Exploring the “costume” seemed relevant to this and perhaps an interesting topic to explore further during my work placements.

I have chosen to format my creative writing piece as a podcast because I would like people to be able to listen to it, hands free, whilst walking in the city or commuting. The language is not too abstract but some elements remain quite theoretical meaning that it suits a wide audience. Plus I would like to explore the spatialisation of sound more.

I have taken a step back from these two episodes and look forward to continuing this podcast. Having reviewed the flaws and potentials of my first attempt, I will develop new ideas and build upon the work of designers I have come across recently (perhaps with a series of interviews?!) ...
