YSRT volume 1 focuses on the importance and benefits of designing cities for young people.
Context: As a studio, we looked into the Catford Regeneration Masterplan and actively seeked to suggest spatial design interventions that would put into question and /or enrich the masterplan. We started by publishing a news-paper highlighting the different types of “value” found in Catford.

We began our independant research on a hunch: I decided to investigate the “absence” of young people in the town centre and the lack of provision for young people in the Catford Masterplan proposal.

YSRT volume 2 explores the concept of digital realm as a form of social infrastructure.
Context: In today’s society, the public digital realm and digital tools are important modes of self expression, especially for young people. The first part of the zine explains why ensuring better digital infrastructure in cities is crucial.

To demonstrate this thought, I created a mockup digital platfrom (on Discord)  entitled “The Invisible Youth Project”. The idea was to collect stories from youth accross the world and to perform them in London whilst live streaming the performance to the digital community. I then aimed to created a discord server specially curated for the youth groups in Lewisham.

Discord:
a platform,
a process,
a tool.

Collected stories from/about youth & spoken
word performance in the streets of London.

PROPOSAL #1

Rethinking the  “City as a Cultural Institution” !

Summary: The archival nature of a discord platform made me reflect about the access to culture as a form of social infrastructure.

Inspired by the open access and flexibiltiy of digital platforms such as Discord, I proposed to rethink cultural institutions as embeded, welcoming places, dispersed within the city rather than monolithic buildings.

The city as a cultural institution aims to make museums more accessible to young people as well as breaking down stigma on youth. This project focuses on youth visibility and voices.

Note: looking back at this project, there are certain elements I am planning on modifying, including the design of the broadcasting centre and the relevance of the names attributed to the spaces (ie: “members room” is an outdated term in regards to the concept of an open access cultural institution).
As part of the ‘museum’, I designed a broadcasting centre and a place for festivities.

Unlike traditional museums who’s function is to preserve and display, the broadcasting centre will actively enable young people to record or create a story of their own.

The festival, will be a moment for community gathering, sharing and celebrating young people’s accomplishments.

Furthermore,  Lewisham has been named London Borough of Culture 2021/2. The City as a Cultural Institution assures the constant renewal of Lewisham’s rich culture as opposed to traditional musuems that preserve and display the past.
